Sulphur content of liquid fuels
The 'Sulphur Content of Liquid Fuels' (England &
Wales) (SI 1460) and Scotland (SSI 169) Regulations 2000 came into force
to implement EU Directive 1999/32/EC. These regulations limit the sulphur
content in gas oil to 0.2%(by mass) and to 01%(by mass) from 1 July 2008,
and for heavy fuel oil the sulphur content shall not exceed 1% by mass.
The aim of these regulations are to reduce emissions of carbon
dioxide and sulphur dioxide resulting
from the combustion of certain types of liquid fuels, and to limit the
harmful effects of such pollution on human beings and the environment.
The regulations are intended to help the UK meet the requirements of the
CLTRAP and the multi-pollutant
- multi-effect protocol.
This Directive does not apply to:
- liquid fuels derived from petroleum used by sea-going ships,
- gas-oil for maritime use used by ships crossing a border between a
third country and a Member State,
- fuels which will be treated before their final use,
- fuels which will be treated in refineries.
