JNCC has recently published an analysis of national vegetation data sets in relation to nitrogen deposition. The study clearly demonstrated significant changes in the abundance of individual species and variables describing habitat structure and function as a result of N deposition. This, together with previous evidence from surveys and experiments, provides clear evidence of impacts of N.
A new book, Nitrogen Deposition and Natura 2000 , has been published of the proceedings of an international workshop which warns of the risks to European wildlife from nitrogen pollution resulting from industry and agriculture. The issue presents a serious challenge for the conservation of natural habitats and species under the Habitats Directive.
